Career Clusters

A great first step in exploring a professional career in North Dakota is to investigate the sixteen Career Clusters and the associated pathways to that profession.

  1. Agriculture, Food & Natural Resources
  2. Architecture & Construction
  3. Arts, A/V Technology & Communications
  4. Business Management & Administration
  5. Education & Training
  6. Finance
  7. Government & Public Administration
  8. Health Science
  9. Hospitality & Tourism
  10. Human Services
  11. Information Technology
  12. Law, Public Safety, Corrections & Security
  13. Manufacturing
  14. Marketing
  15. Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics
  16. Transportation, Distribution & Logistics

Career Clusters are a roadmap to the world of work. They group related careers and industries—such as healthcare, information technology, design, education, and more—so you can see the bigger picture of where your interests and talents might take you. By exploring clusters, you’ll discover how classroom learning connects to real jobs, and how different paths can lead to exciting opportunities.

It’s important to remember that careers don’t always fit neatly into a single cluster. The skills you build in one area—like problem solving, communication, or technical know-how—can easily transfer into another. In fact, many careers span multiple clusters and require a mix of skills from different fields. Using Career Clusters as a guide helps you think broadly, explore connections across industries, and keep your options open as you plan your future.

Career Cluster Activity

  1. Using RUReady.ND.gov, have your students complete the worksheet below before the Expo to help them identify their top three career clusters.
  1. If your school does not have access to RUReady Advance CTE has some great resources for students.
  1. Encourage your students to use the questions below for exhibitors to learn more about the careers that suit their interests and aptitudes!
  • What does a typical day look like in your role?
  • What education or training do you need for this job?
  • What skills are needed in order to do your job?
  • What are the most rewarding and most challenging parts of your job?
  • What kind of technology, tools, or equipment do you use most often in your work?
  • How did you decide on your career pathway?
  • What kinds of entry-level jobs are available for high school students in your company?
  • What high school classes should I take to prepare for a career in this field?
  1. Exhibitors will have signage at their booths listing the Career Clusters their company represents at the Expo. *As the expo gets closer, we will link the exhibitors and their corresponding career clusters here.*
