The North Dakota Department of Transportation adopted federal guidelines for drivers with military commercial experience. Military members – and those recently discharged – who have a military driver’s license which is equivalent to a Commercial Drivers License (CDL) can take the written portion of the CDL test and request to have the CDL road test waived.

Military members and veterans must be approved for the waiver and pass all required knowledge tests as well as meet the visual and medical qualifications.

Military applicants must complete SFN 60071 Application for CDL Skills Test Waiver-Military and mail it to the North Dakota Department of Transportation’s Drivers License Division as indicated on the application form. Forms are available online or at any drivers license location.

Following review of the application and driving record check, the Drivers License Division will notify military applicants in writing if they meet or do not meet the CDL Skills Test Waiver requirements.
